How to Find and Choose the Right Rehab Program for a Loved One: A Comprehensive Guide

Choosing a treatment program is a lot like buying a car. There are way too many choices, everyone says their model is the best, and it’s way too easy to get bogged down in research and analysis-paralysis. And while a car can get you from point A to point B, the right rehab can take you from addiction to long-term sobriety. It’s an important decision. That’s why we created this guide to help you find and choose the right rehab program for you or a loved one.

The Types of Rehab Programs

You can’t find something you don’t know exists. So before you start your research, it’s important to have a firm understanding of the different types of treatment programs available. Each program has their own unique benefits and caters to different needs. Here’s the breakdown:

Detox: In the continuum of care, this is the highest level of care. A medical detox program provides 24/7 medical supervision to clients while they undergo the withdrawal process. These programs typically last anywhere from 7-10 days depending on the substance and addiction history. For those struggling with physical dependence on drugs or alcohol, this is the first step in the treatment journey.

Residential: This is an intensive, in-patient program where patients live at the facility for the duration of their treatment. These programs are typically 30-90 days but can range up 9 months if extended care options are available. Residential level of care provides a structured environment, round-the-clock care, and a high level of clinical support.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP): This is a step down from inpatient rehab, where patients receive continued clinical treatment during the day but return home in the evenings. PHP programs may be coupled with a sober living house where the patient lives when they are not in treatment. This allows for consistent support and accountability while beginning to transition back into the community.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): If we are following the continuum of care, IOP is the last step of the journey. An intensive outpatient program provides clinical support and group therapy sessions for several hours a day, a few days a week. It is not as structured as PHP but continues to provide a therapeutic environment for clients to process their reintegration into everyday life.

Assessing Your Loved One’s Needs

The right program for you may not be the right program for someone else. It’s important to take time and think through what your loved one’s specific needs are in treatment. This will help you make a more informed decision. Consider the following factors:

Severity of Addiction: The severity and duration of the addiction should influence the level of care required. Severe addictions dictate inpatient rehab, while milder cases might benefit from outpatient programs.

Co-occurring Disorders: It’s not uncommon for those struggling with substance abuse to also battle mental health diagnoses. Ensure the facility you choose can address co-occurring disorders through integrated dual-diagnosis treatment.

Support System: Reflect on the support system available to your loved one. A strong support system can be crucial for outpatient programs, while those with limited support may benefit more from residential care.

Personal Preferences: Talk with your loved one about their preferences. While these things should not entirely dictate the decision, the environment, location, and amenities of the rehab facility can impact willingness to participate in and commit to the program.

Researching Rehab Facilities

Once you have a clear understanding of your loved one's wants and needs, it's time to research potential options. Here’s what to look for:

Credentials & Accreditation: The facility should be accredited by reputable organizations, such as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) or The Joint Commission. This guarantees that the facility meets high standards of care and your loved one will be in safe hands.

Treatment Approaches: Different facilities use different treatment approaches. That’s okay! But you want to be on the lookout for evidence-based practices that align with the needs of your loved one. Holland Pathways, for example, employs a holistic approach combining evidence-based therapies with wellness activities.

Staff Qualifications: Since the staff is who your loved one will be in the care of, their qualifications and experience are critical. Ensure the facility employs licensed and experienced professionals, including doctors, therapists, and counselors.

Reviews & Testimonials: Online reviews and testimonials from former patients and their families can provide valuable insights into the facility's quality of care and patient experiences. While one or two bad reviews shouldn’t necessarily dissuade you, look for patterns and use the reviews to get a larger picture of the program to see if it meets your needs.

Questions to Ask

When speaking with potential rehab choices, asking the right questions can help you make a better decision. Here are some questions to consider:

  • What is the treatment approach and philosophy?

  • What types of therapies and activities are offered?

  • What is the staff-to-patient ratio?

  • Are family members involved in the treatment process?

  • What aftercare and support services are provided?

  • What are the facility's success rates and how are they measured?

  • What is the cost of the program and what insurance plans are accepted?

Making the Decision

After gathering all the necessary information, take the time to discuss the options with your loved one and other family members. Remember, the goal is to find a program where your loved one feels supported, safe, and motivated to embark on their journey to recovery.
